Early Life

Minaj was born Onika Tanya Maraj on December 8, 1982, in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago, and moved with her family to Queens, New York, when she was 5 years old. Minaj’s father was a severe drug addict with a long history of violence. At one point, he set fire to the family’s home in a failed attempt to kill Minaj’s mother. Those early struggles, Minaj has said, helped fuel her drive to rise above the life her parents knew. “I’ve always had this female-empowerment thing in the back of my mind,” she told Details magazine, “because I wanted my mother to be stronger, and she couldn’t be. I thought, ‘If I’m successful, I can change her life.'”

To reach that point, the young Minaj developed personas for herself that would allow her to reinvent herself. An early incarnation was “Cookie,” then came “Harajuku Barbie” before finally settling on Nicki Minaj. “Fantasy was my reality,” she has said. Minaj clearly had a knack for performance. At the age of 12, she authored her first rap, then went on to delve into acting at LaGuardia High School of Music and Art, the school that inspired the movie Fame. But her acting career didn’t take off, and she took up a range of steady jobs, including waitressing at Red Lobster, where she was fired for being rude to customers. Nicki Minaj Biography.

Career

Determined to make it in the music business, Minaj took on backup singing roles for local New York City rappers, including Full Force. Soon, she began writing her own material. She was eventually discovered by the Dirty Money CEO Fendi, who came across Minaj’s MySpace page, loved what he heard, and signed her to his label. Nicki Minaj Biography.

That connection led Minaj to Lil Wayne, who collaborated with her on a series of mixtapes, the first of which, Playtime Is Over, was released in April 2007. This and subsequent mixtapes, including Sucka Free (2008) and Beam Me Up Scotty (2009), showcased Minaj’s female swagger and out-front style. She signed to Lil Wayne’s Young Money label in August, 2009, becoming its first ever female artist. She solidified her growing rep with appearances on the We Are Young Money compilation album (2009), also collaborating with Mariah Carey and Robin Thicke.

Debut Album: ‘Pink Friday’

By early 2010, anticipation had built up around Minaj’s debut album, which was scheduled for release that fall. In April of that year, she released her first single, “Massive Attack,” followed by “Your Love.” Two months later she won Best Hip Hop Female at the annual BET Awards. She dedicated the award to Lil Wayne. The Pink Friday album dropped that November, with eight singles released to promote it. It went triple platinum, and received generally positive reviews. Entertainment Weekly’s Brad Wete was reminded of “her labelmate Drake — fully aware of how amazing she is, but also how fragile.” Minaj displayed a range of alter-egos on her releases, including Onika, Nicki Lewinsky and Roman Zolanski. ‘American Idol’ Feud With Mariah Carey

In March 2012, Minaj made a guest appearance on the popular television competition American Idol. She told singer Jennifer Lopez, then a judge on the show, to “scoot over a little bit” to make room for her at the judges’ table. Rumors then flew of a feud between Minaj and Lopez, which Minaj later dismissed. Later that year, however, Minaj apparently got her wish when she was announced as a judge on American Idol. It didn’t take long before the fireworks began between her and fellow judge Mariah Carey. The pair seemed to take an instant dislike to each other and openly feuded during the show’s early auditions.

Television viewers got to see the two square off once the show’s 12th season began airing in early 2013. Minaj and Carey got into an argument during auditions in Charlotte, North Carolina, with Minaj storming off stage. Carey later claimed that Minaj threatened her with physical harm and decided to hire extra security as a result, according to the New York Daily News. She appeared on a slew of singles in 2017, and with the simultaneous release and successes of “No Frauds,” “Regret in Your Tears” and “Changed It,” she took over the record of most entries on the Billboard Hot 100 by a female artist, a mark previously held by Aretha Franklin.

In early 2019, Minaj kicked off The Nicki Wrld Tour in Frankfurt, Germany, with rapper Juice Wrld. Along with her many collaborations, the artist dropped her first solo single of the year, “Megatron,” in late June. Nicki Minaj Biography.

In September, after the release of The Angry Birds Movie 2, in which she had a voice role, Minaj delivered the stunning tweet that she’d decided to retire to “have my family.” Although the artist later promised her fans that there was more music to come, she took a step toward fulfilling her family desires by tying the knot with boyfriend Kenneth Petty in October.

After kicking off 2020 with the Meghan Trainor collaboration “Nice to Meet Ya,” Minaj appeared as a guest judge on the season 12 premiere of RuPaul‘s Drag Race. She then joined Doja Cat for a remix of “Say So,” which became Minaj’s first song to reach the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100.

Personal Life

In her song “All Things Go“, Minaj revealed that she had an abortion as a teenager. Minaj has said that although it has “haunted” her, she stands by her decision.

Early in her career, Minaj claimed to be bisexual. However, she eventually stated in a 2010 Rolling Stone interview that she only said that to get attention: “I think girls are sexy, but I’m not going to lie and say that I date girls. “In May 2020, she once again addressed her sexuality, stating in a verse on Doja Cat’s “Say So” remix, “Used to be bi, but now I’m just hetero.” The lyric received criticism from some members of the LGBT community, who accused her of “bisexual erasure”. Nicki Minaj Biography.

In late 2014, Minaj separated from her longtime boyfriend Safaree Samuels, whom she had dated since 2000. Several tracks on The Pinkprint are believed to have been inspired by the end of their relationship. Minaj began dating rapper Meek Mill in early 2015. In January 2017, she announced that she had ended their relationship. She briefly dated fellow rapper Nas in the year 2018.

In December 2018, Minaj began dating her childhood friend Kenneth “Zoo” Petty and filed for a marriage license in August 2019. She announced that they had officially married on October 21. She hyphenated his last name to hers upon marriage, becoming Maraj-Petty. After facing federal charges for failing to register as a sex offender in California, her husband was entered into the California Megan’s Law database in 2020, having been convicted of attempted rape in the first degree in 1995 in New York. He previously served nearly four years in prison for the mentioned crime.

In July 2011, her cousin Nicholas Telemaque was murdered near his home in Brooklyn, an incident she references in her songs “All Things Go” and “Champion”. In November 2017, Minaj’s brother Jelani was convicted of predatory sexual assault against a child and endangering the welfare of a child. On January 27, 2020, he was sentenced by Nassau County Supreme Court Judge Robert McDonald to 25 years to life.

In July 2020, Minaj announced via Instagram that she was expecting her first child. On September 30, 2020, Minaj gave birth to a son.

In February 2021, Minaj’s father, Robert Maraj, died while walking along a road on Long Island in a hit-and-run accident. He was 64. A 70-year-old man has been charged after Nicki Minaj’s dad was killed in a hit-and-run. Nassau County Police Department said in a news conference they had tracked Charles Polevich’s car, and he turned himself in to police. He’s been arraigned and charged with 2 felonies: leaving scene of incident involving death of a person and tampering with or suppressing physical evidence. Polevich allegedly hit Maraj with his 1992 white Volvo station wagon at the intersection of Roslyn Rd. and Raff Ave. in the village of Mineola. Cops say Polevich “then exited his vehicle stood over the victim asked him if ‘he was ok,’ walked and returned to his vehicle and fled the scene.” Cops say Polevich then drove to his home “avoiding intersections and did conceal his vehicle in the detached garage at his residence.” TMZ was told Polevich’s bail has been set at $250k and that he had to surrender his passport and his travel has been restricted to New York. Minaj has yet to comment about the situation publicly.

Controversy

In July 2018, Minaj received backlash for her choice to collaborate with 6ix9ine for their collaborative single “Fefe as the controversial rapper had pleaded guilty to one felony count after posting explicit videos of a sexual performance with a 13-year-old child in 2015 Minaj responded by pointing out that “Do What U Want“, the 2013 collaboration single of Lady Gaga and R. Kelly, had been praised by the very same publication despite public allegations of child pornography against him. She called the move bullying and claimed this demonstrated a double standard within the music industry. After numerous requests, Minaj later on deleted her tweets

During New York Fashion Week 2018, at an after party hosted by Harper’s Bazaar, fellow rapper Cardi B caused significant controversy when she threw one of her high heel shoes at, and attempted to physically fight, Minaj. Cardi B later alleged that Minaj had previously “liked” comments made by other users on social media, who spoke negatively about Cardi B’s abilities to take care of her newly born daughter. Minaj subsequently discussed the incident in an episode of her Beats 1 radio show, Queen Radio, in which she denied the accusations and called the altercation “humiliating”. Minaj fired back with allegations that Cardi had brutalized women who allegedly slept with her husband, calling a dead child a monkey, and racism against black women by calling them “roaches.”

Feuds

Disagreements between Minaj and rapper Remy Ma originated in 2007, when Ma took note of Minaj’s freestyle record, nicknamed “Dirty Money”, from her mixtape Playtime Is Over (2007). In the record, Minaj recites: “Tell that bitch with the crown to run it like Chris Brown/she won three rounds, I’ma need a hundred thou/like ‘Chinatown’—bitches better bow down/oh you ain’t know, betcha bitches know now/fuck I got a gun—let her know that I’m the one”. Minaj reportedly never confirmed or denied that the song was about Ma. Although Ma and Minaj shared words of encouragement in recent years, their relationship soon soured, and they began releasing verses and songs with lyrics aimed at each other, including Ma’s “Money Showers” with Fat Joe and Minaj’s “Make Love” with Gucci Mane. On February 25, 2017, Ma released “Shether“. On March 3, 2017, during a visit to The Wendy Williams Show, Ma accused Minaj of “trying to keep [her] off of red carpets” and “trying to make sure awards don’t go to [her]”. A week later, in an interview hosted by BuzzFeed News, Ma stated that she had second thoughts about releasing the diss track, and commented on the difficulties of being a woman in the music industry. Minaj subsequently responded with the song “No Frauds.”

Minaj has been embroiled in a feud with rapper Lil’ Kim since her success with Pink Friday. Kim accused Minaj of copying her image, saying: “If you are going to steal my swag, you gonna have to pay. Something gotta give. You help me, I help you. That’s how it goes to me.” Minaj’s single “Roman’s Revenge” with Eminem was believed to be a response to Kim’s comments, although she later denied this. She responded to the situation in an interview with HOT 97‘s Angie Martinez saying, “She picked a fight with Foxy, then she picked a fight with Eve, then she picked a fight with Remy, then it was Mrs. Wallace, then it was Nicki Minaj. Every time you in the news, it’s ’cause you gettin’ at somebody! Where’s your music? Put your music out, and when I see your name on Billboard, that’s when I’ll respond to you. Other than that, goodbye. It’s Barbie, bitch. “Lil’ Kim reignited the feud with the release of her mixtape Black Friday (the title of which directly referenced Minaj). The artwork portrays Lil’ Kim decapitating Minaj with a sword. A fragment of a diss track called “Tragedy” was released in response by Minaj in April 2011. Following the release of Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, critics suggested that the track “Stupid Hoe” may have contained attacks directed at Kim. Lil’ Kim later suggested in an interview with 105’s Breakfast Club that the song “Automatic” was similar to her unreleased material, also calling Minaj “obnoxious” and “catty”.

Throughout her career, Minaj has won numerous awards, including six American Music Awards, 10 BET Awards, seven BET Hip Hop Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, five MTV Video Music Awards, six MTV Europe Music Awards, two People’s Choice Awards, one Soul Train Music Award, and four Teen Choice Awards.
