– [ ] Hey what’s up beautiful people, i go by the name Showboyc, I’m out here with Damsy it’s the exposure interview.
• CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF IN BRIEF ?
My name is Showboyc my birth name is AFOLABI Shobowale , I was born in Lagos Nigeria.Ive spent most of my life in Lagos city which has been a very very important part of my identity ,part of who I am. Thou I love traveling and I get to go to different places but Lagos is just a very important
part of me, cos it’s one place that inspires me to do better, inspires the hustle spirit in me.
• TELL US SHORTLY HOW IT ALL STARTED ?
Music started for me since I was a little boy ,I’ve always been in love with musics once I was very young. I grew up in a family where music was embraced , it wasn’t one of those places where music wasn’t appreciated. Not like some families hate music but I’ve seen families where music isn’t paid attention to, but that wasn’t my own background. My dad is really into fuji music, my parents are music lovers generally. I remember when I was in secondary school like js1 and my mum used to play this old school tape that had Wyclef, Shaggy and you know all those guys that used to kill it in the late 90’s, while preparing I and my siblings for school everyday .Something I know is right from the days even before I started making my own music, when something bangs it just sticks to my memory. Everything really changed when I discovered Drake in 2010 on MTV and I got really invested in his music. I was just really drawn into the concept of a young guy doing something so amazing, cos he’s like the poster kid for this generation of artists coming into this hip hop generation. And it just inspired me to start writing my own music almost immediately and fast forward to a year later , I was out of secondary school and I had a laptop. So I used to download beat off the internet with my friend then we’ll record on them. Then it was rap music I was doing I wasn’t very familiar with the AFROBEAT , I’ve always listened to afrobeat but Rap was easier coz you just had to rhyme back then. Then I remember singing and AFROBEAT took shape after I dropped my first single “ That show girl” , that’s just a brief history of how music started for me.
• HOW DO U DRAW INSPIRATION TO DO YOUR MUSIC ?
The inspiration for my music comes from good vibes , mood and good sounds too. Cos I really love good music , I’m a big fan of good music regardless of the genre. So I love making music that moves not just having a beat that slaps but more about what you’re doing , verses , melodies , lines. So when Im writing my music I always put myself in the audience corner, like how am I going to feel if someone else did this music and I’m supposed to enjoy it. That’s how I draw my inspiration and a little bit of story telling too , I like talking about my life in my music, tho I’m yet to put a lot of that out there yet!. But with my coming project I’ll be really letting my fans see the personal side of me , not just making love songs. I wan to make songs about my life and see if I can inspire other people like my own idols inspire me, cos I feel like that’s what music should be about…
• WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES SO FAR ?
Lol challenges…. hmmm if I’m going to be talking about that we’ll probably be here all day.One of the things I’ve learnt is that life will always hit you with tests, I try not to get too invested in the highs and lows it’s all part of my journey.Ive learn to take everything that comes my way as an opportunity to learn and grow. My old challenge use to be like I don’t have money, I need massive fund bla bla bla. But I had to get my self out of that mental state cos if I keep doing that , sitting on that spot telling my self it’s only major thing or nothing then I’ll be forever stuck in that spot and not get anything done. I just turned that around if I drop something and I get just a thousand people really really invested in my music , sharing it and rooting for me then I’m doing something right. So I won’t say I have any challenge with the music it’s just part of my story I’m writing ..
• ARE YOU CURRENTLY SIGNED TO ANY LABEL OR UNDER ANY MANAGEMENT ?
Hmmm no I don’t have a label or a management either. Tho I’m open to offers and deals but I’m flying solo right now. And the funny thing is I manage myself basically. But I have a team of four to six people at my core that I ask for opinions when I do my music and make moves, this guys don’t even make me feel the impact of not having a manager. Yeah I realize I need someone but it’s better to have someone who’s more invested in your growth than you yourself, someone who will go to out there to push for you. I have a couple of people that really ride for me but till I get that person that’s going to be my Clyde I’ll just be Bonny alone …
• TELL US BRIEFLY ON YOUR OWN OPINION ON THE VIRUS OUTBREAK ( Covid-19 ) – And How you Have Been Coping ?
What’s happening right now is one of those events that we read about or they tell us stories about but we don’t know how serious it was cos it was just words, but we’re living in it right now with this virus. It started gaining traction in early January when just China’s was dealing with it and even then we didn’t know how serious it was, we all thought it was going to blow over. I think it’s just one of those signs of nature’s superiority, just a way of nature telling us we don’t own the place we’re just tenants. A lot of people are losing their life’s to it and all. But I’m working on my music regardless, tho there’s not music you can do when you can’t do out to workthis with the producers you want to but I’m making most out of it.Especialy cos we entertainers have an obligation to entertain and keep People happy during this tough time. But I know we’ll all pull through, this can’t be the end.
• WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS THIS YEAR/WHAT SHOULD YOUR FANS EXPECT THIS YEAR..?
This year I’m putting my best foot forward, release amazing contents. I already dropped a single and I’ve got couple of collaborations coming through about “ songs that people put me on.About 5 so far. Coming into year I had this surge of inspiration to work on my debut EP which I’ve been teasing for over a year now. I’ve never been as inspired as I am right now, so I’ll deliver the Ep regardless of what happens. I’ll share my story.
• YOUR HOBBIES ?
Apart from making and listening to music which is my favorite thing, like when I wake up in the morning the first thing I do is listen to music to set me in the right mood for the day. I love playing football tho it’s been a while since I played, I miss playing.
And then I love going to the beach swimming there playing ,football with my friends. Yeah I love reading too any thing I can get my hands on that interests me, I really love really about world politics it’s fascinating and I learn one or two things from it. That’s just few of the things I love doing, the ones I can share at least …
